Introducing: MTV Tr3s 'Último Año' Star Mauricio Henao
MTV Tr3s' new thriller telenovela Último Año features all of the psychological drama one faces in high school without any fluff. We recently chatted with the show's bad boy Mauricio Henao about his new role.
Find out what the 26-year-old revealed about his relationship status, Latina celebrity crush, and more below!
Tell us about the new show Último Año?
The show isn’t your typical telenovela. It’s very relatable and touches on subjects that matter to young people. The network partnered with the United Nations to ensure that social issues that matter to this demographic are developed into the script. It feels like real life and what young people are really going through these days like bullying and having protected sex.
Are you anything like your character Martin in real life?
No, not at all! He’s kind of this bipolar kid. He comes from a really poor family and he’s very ambitious. He decides to move to the city and ends up having a totally different life. He ends up turning the story upside down.
What led you to pursue a career in telenovelas?
I started working as a model when I graduated from high school. I worked in New York for about two years. Once I came to Miami to do a fashion show, I met a few people from Telemundo and they suggested that I start acting. I decided to pursue it and haven’t regretted it since.
What gives you the most pride about being Colombian?
I love how supportive our families are. When I told my mom that I wanted to become an actor, she said she rather me go to college, but eventually she was right on board. She believes in me and that makes such a big difference when you are pushing for your dreams.
What’s your relationship status?
I’m single right now. I got out of a relationship a couple of months ago. I’m looking for the right girl to come along.
Do you have a celebrity Latin crush?
There are a couple. I love Genesis Rodriguez. I met her a few years ago and I love that she started out in telenovelas and now she’s a huge movie star. That’s definitely something that I want to do too.
What do you hope for your career in the next 5 years?
I’m the kind of person that doesn’t overthink that kind of stuff. I like to just let it flow, but I do have a vision to do film. Hopefully I will move to Los Angeles one day and start on achieving that dream.

Tr3 anuncio hoy el estreno de su tercera novela para la juventud Hispana “Ultimo Año”. El thriller de suspenso psicológico introduce personajes y temas complejos que reflejan la experiencia de la escuela secundaria. Para aun más fortalecer su relevancia, la cadena se asocio con los expertos de entretenimiento educativo Population Media Center para ayudar integrar mensajes influyentes dentro los guiones y piezas creativas con el propósito de desarrollar de tal manera personajes que puedan convertirse en modelos de conducta para la audiencia. El nuevo formato diario destaca la realidades y las consecuencias de los asuntos sociales entre la juventud como el anticoncepción, opciones de reproducción saludable, VIH/Sida y STD, violencia domestica y bullying cibernético, entre otros tópicos. “Ultimo Año” se estrena de lunes a viernes a las 6pm EST.
“Ultimo Año” se desarrolla en el mundo de los adolescentes. Martin, un adolescente ideal, se incorpora a una escuela de élite como parte de un programa de intercambio estudiantil. Vive con Benjamín, un chico popular de quien se hace mejor amigo. Ambos se enamoran de la misma chica. La desconfianza comienza cuando un Martin manipulador le roba sus amigos, su popularidad y su vida entera. Ante la incredulidad de familia y amigos, Benjamín comienza una batalla solitaria para desenmascarar al verdadero Martin.

“Ultimo Año” is set in the world of high school adolescence. Martin, an apparently ideal teenager, arrives at an elite school as part of a student exchange program. He lives with Benjamin, a popular kid who takes him under his wing and soon the two become best friend. And then they both fall in love with the same girl. And mistrust develops, when a conniving Martin steals Benjamin’s friends, his popularity and his entire life. Faced with disbelief from family and friends, Benjamin begins to wage a solitary battle at unmasking the real Martin. The 70-episode novela is produced by Argos Productions in Mexico and stars Mauricio Hénao (Columbian), Kendra Santa Cruz (Mexican), Martín Barba (Mexican), and Iliana Gomez (Mexican).

El guapo actor de origen colombiano protagoniza en la serie del canal Tr3s, "Ultimo Año", que se estrenó el lunes pasado a las 6 p.m, y que trata temas muy actuales para los jóvenes como la sexualidad, las drogas y el "bullying".
Aunque en este proyecto el actor interpreta a "Martin Santoro", un joven sin escrúpulos que miente y engaña a quienes están a su alrededor, lo cierto es que en la vida real Henao es bastante simpático y se ofreció gustoso a compartir con nuestros lectores sus secreticos para el día de los enamorados.
¿Qué clase de piropos se le deben decir a una mujer?
No conozco muchos piropos, pero lo más importante es no ponerse a inventar, una mujer no se va a sentir atraída hacia una línea que diga por ejemplo: "si como caminas cocinas".
Lo importante es ser real y dejarse llevar por la química. Además yo tampoco me le lanzaría encima a una mujer que va por la calle. Para enamorar hay que tomarse tiempo y tener un poco de humor.

Yo personalmente soy muy tranquilo, pero si quieres impresionar por favor no te pongas un par de tenis.
El lugar
Siempre llevo a mi novia a un buen restaurante, creo que una buena cena es bien importante, pero si tienes tiempo y te puedes ir unos dos días de escape, podrías ir a las Bahamas en donde estuve hace poco y me encantó. Vivo en Miami y de todas formas la playa también se puede disfrutar acá.
¿Qué mensaje te transmitiría una mujer que lleve los siguientes atuendos a una cita contigo?:

El actor colombiano Mauricio Hénao durante un evento promocional del nuevo thriller 'Último año', en un hotel de la Ciudad de México.
Es buen amigo, cariñoso, simpático, aunque también tiene su lado oscuro, como todos.
Pero nada comparado con su personaje en Último año, la nueva telenovela de Tr3s que inició el lunes pasado.
En él, el tercer melodrama producido por este canal de cable, Hénao protagoniza a un joven con doble personalidad, que lo convierte en el bueno y el villano de la historia.
"No, no me identifico para nada con él", dice sonriente el guapo actor colombiano de 25 años de edad. "Es un chavo muy raro, aunque de pronto el personaje te envuelve en parte de su vida y terminas sintiéndote un poco como él".
Último año es un melodrama de suspenso, en donde la mayoría de sus personajes son estudiantes de secundaria y tratan temas sin tabúes.
El actor, y en algún tiempo modelo, explica que se abordan temas de todo lo que hablan y hacen los jóvenes en esa edad: sexo, drogas, anticonceptivos, embarazos no deseados, enfermedades de transmisión sexual, violencia doméstica y hasta bullying cibernético.
"Hablamos de todos estos temas, el lado oscuro de las personas, con un mensaje pero también con una enseñanza de cómo asumir las consecuencias", comenta el actor vía telefónica desde Miami, Florida, donde radica.
La cadena se asoció con expertos en entretenimiento educativo de Population Media Center para incluir mensajes que influyeran en los jóvenes y recursos de ayuda [www.tr3s.com].
En este melodrama, Hénao protagoniza a un doble personaje: Martín Santoro y Tomás Ruiz.
Martín es el adolescente ideal que estudia en una escuela de élite como parte de un intercambio estudiantil, y Benjamín, su amigo millonario, lo lleva a vivir con él a su mansión.
Pero entonces Martín se obsesiona tanto con esa vida de opulencias, que a lo largo del melodrama se verá su transformación.
"Es un personaje complicado", explica el actor. "Y no sólo por esas dos personalidades tan distintas, sino porque, desde el principio, conseguir el protagónico no fue fácil".
El actor colombiano comenta que fue sometido a varias audiciones porque la producción necesitaba asegurarse que el mismo actor pudiera hacer dos personajes al mismo tiempo.
Hénao no es ningún novato en la actuación: ha trabajado en varias telenovelas como ¿Dónde está Elisa?, El fantasma de Elena, ambas producciones de Telemundo, y Grachi, realizada con Nickelodeon Latinoamérica.
Comenta que se preparó muy bien para esta actuación y que estudió varias películas en donde el protagonista hacen un doble personaje.
"Es un personaje que al principio enamora al público", dice en referencia a la reacción de televidentes en Latinoamérica donde el melodrama ya se transmitió. "Pero la verdad es que cuando Martín se pone bipolar lo odian".
Hénao que dice estar "solterito y sin compromiso", afirma que tanto le encantó México, donde se rodó la serie, que ahora está audicionando en algunas propuestas que se le han presentado.
Aunque comenta que también tiene planes de estudiar actuación por algunos meses en Los Ángeles o Nueva York.
"Me encanta el cine, me apasiona mucho y veré si hay oportunidad por ese lado", dice el actor que creció en este país.
Comentó que por el momento no tiene planeado hacer nada sobre modelaje, en donde comenzó su carrera.
"Ya no me da tiempo para modelar", asegura. "Por el momento me quiero enfocar en la actuación".
